In this opinion piece, LoughTec CEO Sean McDermott gives his insight into the ever-increasing numbers of cyber attacks, and what you can do to reduce the attack surface.
It seems to be every week we are seeing breach after breach, ransom after ransom – it never stops. We are now seeing lots of companies paying up. The natural escalation of this will be more cyber security incidents, with more threat actors taking up the red keyboard to follow a lucrative career path.
So, what can we do?
To be honest, I don’t think it’s a battle that we can win anymore. You are beaten before you start. For every solution the IT Industry comes up with, it feels like the threat actors are coming up with two new problems. For those new problems, companies sell lots of new solutions that all promise to do amazing things, but the breaches keep coming.
We are seeing the very best companies being breached – the companies that have invested in all the latest tools. Ironically, those that seem to avoid the very worst attacks are being spared because they have archaic legacy systems in place, and no one can be bothered writing code to destroy them – the irony!
For years, we have all followed the Microsoft way – being forced into upgrade after upgrade. As most of us build our infrastructure in a near identical manner, one simple flaw means we can all become highly vulnerable on any given day. Maybe it’s time to start to think differently and think for ourselves, rather than following the IT crowd down the road to hell?
