World Record Ransom Payment
20 Sep 2024
Breaking a world record is usually associated with a fantastic acheivement and something to be proud of, however if you have just experienced a cyber attack and been ransomwared, breaking a world record for the largest ransom ever paid out is a very bad scenario.
This is the situation for Cencora Inc., a major drug distributor who has apparently paid $75 million in Bitcoin to hackers following a ransomware attack, marking the largest known cyber extortion payment. The payment was made in three installments in March after a February data breach. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT traced the 1,091.5 BTC transactions to the Dark Angels group a Russian based cyber crime syndicate, who initially demanded $150 million. The breach exposed personal data and Cencora reported $31.4 million in related expenses. Ransomware attacks continue to rise, with larger businesses increasingly targeted due to their capacity to pay significant ransoms.
