Importance of Updates
You may be all too familiar with those pop-ups on your devices, telling you that there is an update available for your desktop, laptop or mobile devices. Most of us have a tendency to click on “Remind me later”, as we don’t want the hassle of being unable to use the device while it updates. But hopefully we can change your mind, and get everyone to start regularly updating the software on their devices to improve your cyber security.
Why should I update my device?
Software updates are great, they can bring a lot of new features to your devices and fix any annoying bugs that may have been previously plaguing you during your daily use. Most importantly they bring a lot of unseen security updates. These security updates can patch any vulnerabilities that have been discovered that can prevent the loss of data or money.
What could happen if I did not update my device?
Some vulnerabilities could allow hackers to gain access to devices and the data on them. These exploits can also be used to affect other people who would have otherwise been safe. We have all heard of the ransomware attacks on companies all over the globe, usually caused by unpatched vulnerabilities.
Another problem that could arise from out of date software, is that hackers could use your personal or work email address, to send out email via a Phishing scam. Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending emails pretending to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.
Conclusion
Keeping devices up to date is vital for all users and companies, and it’s one of the most important ways of keeping data in the right hands. It is also great way to keep devices healthy during their lifespan, ensuring stability and minimal downtime during its run time. So do you really have an excuse to not update regularly?
