A finance worker at a multinational firm fell victim to a sophisticated deepfake scam, resulting in a loss of $25 million.
Hong Kong police revealed that the worker was tricked into participating in a video call with deepfake replicas of company staff, including the chief financial officer.
Senior superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching highlighted that the elaborate ruse involved all participants being fake, leading to the massive financial loss.
Despite initial suspicions of a phishing email, the worker was convinced by the realistic appearance and voices of the deepfake colleagues in a online video meeting.
Believing everyone else on the call was real, a worker in Hong Kong fell victim to a deepfake scam, resulting in the remittance of $200 million Hong Kong dollars, approximately $25.6 million. This case highlights the growing concern around the use of deepfake technology for fraudulent activities.
